When an exhibition title calls my name and, even better, if it is by the one and only Lubaina Himid.
‘Barricades’ is a small and hidden show at Hollybush Gardens showcasing Lubaina’s mix series work, for example, the ongoing series ‘Men in Drawers’. These over painted objects and furniture alongside work on canvases and papers, evolves from the means of protection or escape, but also to improvise with and repurpose these objects in time of need.
If you know Lubaina’s work, the majority of it is understood by interaction (it comes to my mind one of my favourite installations, ‘The Colours of Our Past’). In ‘Barricades’ we have dislocated doors, hidden drawers, underside shelf…but only few objects and the hide and seek playful hidden corners of the gallery have me that glimpse of interaction. Does the white cube give full room to new identities and new perspectives? Watch video here.
