Last month I visited my friends from the Community Arts Box in Brixton. They created an exhibition showcasing visual art, poetry, installations, and music by the global refugee community. It conceived an essential contribution to the ongoing debate on migration and border politics in the UK, challenging preconceived notions of refugees.
It visually unfolded to express who these people are, illuminating the strength and resilience of these communities to stand in the face of adversity.
I always say, you don’t need mainstream/high end galleries or either white box displays to make an exhibition. Whatever is made with love, respect, inclusion, and collaboration is 10 times more worthy.
