Not your typical museum-no grand archives, no traditional architecture-but that’s exactly what made it so special. More than just a museum, it was a celebration of migration, multiculturalism, and the stories that shape who we are. And that was happening in Lewisham, in the middle of everyday life, in the middle of a multicultural side of London.
From playful, interactive displays, to the beautiful mishmash of languages filling the space, the Migration Museum felt like home—a safe, welcoming, and thought-provoking space. It wasn’t just about history; it was about people. Their work is truly amazing, giving voice to migrant perspectives and making sure these stories aren’t just told but felt.
They also knew how to throw a farewell party with free workshops, delicious food, and plenty of cheers to what’s next.
And what’s next? A new home in central London in 2027. While we might miss the community feel of Lewisham, this move means something powerful: migration stories taking up space, right at the heart of the city. It’s about visibility, accessibility, and making sure these conversations aren’t just happening on the margins but right where they belong: at the centre.
For now, we say goodbye to this chapter, but definitely not to the spirit of the Migration Museum. Can’t wait to see what’s next!
