Seeing in person the detailed, creative, and meaningful work of Alexis Peskine is a spiritual experience itself.
I went on the last day, right before closing, with all the October Gallery for myself, so I could take the proper time to admire the work but also wonder about the aspects and stories of the Orishas. What it is clear is that Peskine represented the abundance and wellbeing of spirituality on his work alongside the representation of the diverse African diaspora.
Behind those evoked spiritual objects, are also historical links to trade and currency, colours that are linked to moods and energies, and 18th century upper class portraits, transforming everything to a celebration of the diaspora and its abundance.
What about using nails on wooden “canvases”? I just found the whole thing stunning.
