I recently discovered Julius Eastman at Autograph. Did you know that he was an activist who based his life experiences as a gay African American to question what was to be American and the ideals of classical music?
With a room full of blue cyanotype prints, Eric Gyamfi celebrates to the fullest the legacy of Julius Eastman: Black to the fullest, musician to the fullest, homosexual to the fullest.
That visual relation to this narrative is a win-win for me (could be a covered ceiling be too much or not?).
The gallery transforms itself into a puzzle where images of Julius and Eric emerge, combining between each other but also differentiating from each other. Why? Because that’s how Julius work was, based in repetitions. Another little detail that is a super win-win for me.
A very peaceful room (with audio notes in the background) to encounter-and meditate- with time and legacy.
