The abstraction of the mind by Graciela Iturbide was fascinating. Presenting a work only in black and white, the exhibition Shadowlines at The Photographers Gallery has a beautiful storyline, it is poignant, but also has lovely visuals, and is rich in contrast.

During the 1970s, and that’s how she became well known, Iturbide worked for the Instituto Nacional Indigenista, documenting indigenous cultures. She received international acclaim for her work in the town of Juchitán, Oaxaca, where she photographed the community’s marketplace and scenes of domestic life, both of which were dominated by women. A powerful female narrative is across her work to be said.

Her documentary photography explores the relationships between man and nature, the individual and the cultural, the real and the psychological and she captures that magically. A simple display for this exhibition, a white cube (with a colourful wall) but with this relevant body of work you don’t need anything else.
