Celebrating the work of Judy Chicago also means celebrating us: women and life.
‘Revelations’ is not only her unpublished manuscript aka catalogue for this exhibition (a piece of collection to be honest -yes, it is on my shelves already-), but also an exhibition organised thematically around it. I admire her amount of research not only in feminist theories, creative practices, collaborative work, etc. But in those religious theories where god was, primarily, a woman. That took balls if you think about how patriarchal religions and their system are (I’m not a believer so my opinion is, only, societal).
The exhibition has tones of drawings, embroidery, video installation, and collaborative work, a full archival and never-before-seen artworks during her career of 60 years. A candy shop for me. And yes, it can feel like attending a temple, and maybe you are more or less into feminist art, but the main point is that Chicago put, between other female artists that unfortunately are not recognised yet, the female perspective and female body politics into play, with a seat at the table. I remember the moment that a lecturer showed me The Dinner Party and The Birth Project. I don’t remember the class or anything else, but discovering such a powerful works was an important point in my practice alongside other relevant and activist topics. A long waited exhibition, Chicago!
