The first fair of the year is here, London Art Fair, and there has been some improvement.
Installations, curated spaces, performances in between, a whole bunch of emerging artists, and a surprisingly rich program of talks. Even, including 22 international exhibitors. I went today instead of attending yesterday’s VIP preview. I couldn’t make it, but here I am, posting on the same day like a total influencer (probably won’t happen again, let’s be real). Anyway, today was quiet, it gave me the space to properly dive into the art world. The crowd was mostly white, with a passion for art, and of course, a few with very full pockets. But honestly? It was mostly browsing vibes.
The stalls, though, were quiet, even with the fair being busy. And this got me thinking, do galleries only engage with people who have money? Or their “contacts”? Because listen, I’m not shy. I’m pretty friendly. I make eye contact, say hello, take catalogues, give feedback, ask questions, and you can tell how excited I am when I find something that I like, but very few actually engaged in conversation. Maybe the walls were just too sterile. Maybe it’s that art fair magic, where everything feels as though it’s encased in a bubble of curated indifference. And yes, I know, art fairs aren’t exactly my cup of tea (I’m trying, though! Progress, I guess?). But seriously, when the vibe is more shopping mall than art experience, it’s hard not to feel like the whole thing is missing the mark. The galleries are clearly here to sell—obviously—but the sense of discovery? The excitement of exploring raw, unfiltered creativity? Well, let’s just say it’s overshadowed by the transactional energy. So, while I’m still trying to embrace the art fair world, I’m left wondering if it’s all just a bit too manufactured? But hey, there’s always a next time. Meantime, here are my highlights:
