Pretty much the same as Frieze London but more refined I would say. Or at least was my experience after being present in a sale of a Basquiat for £12m and people eating at the Nobu restaurant because, when it comes to art, pretty much I saw everything already.
I appreciate the mix of works under the same ceiling. From old, very old (I mean an Egyptian coffin?) with contemporary (like Judy Chicago for example) to baroque furniture, rare books, and Rembrandt. I mean, your head explodes. But everything is in the most traditional of settings, in a brown-dark blue palette. Wort of like sticking to masters is equal to old and tradition until I saw these works and I said, actually, they are trying to modernise themselves a bit. But still there is a lot to do.
Here are my highlights:
1. ‘We Are a Matrilineal Family’ by Yun Suknam. I like the stiffness of the material and it’s colour, making a matriarcal family tree super strong and settle, in contrast with the dramatist -and stunning colour- of the fabric.
2. Inkjet print mounted on aluminium in artist’s frame (although not a fan of the frame and the reflection of the glass) by Wolfgang Tillmans.
3. The transparency and delicacy of this work by Leonor Fini is so dreamy.
4. This little painting by Bridget Tichenor.
5. And the one and only Leonora Carrington.
6. Visceral, raw, intriguing, full of detail, and make me wonder what’s going on. Very much appreciated. By Adriana Varejão
7. I am always here for surrealism so thanks Marcel Jean.
8. The whole set of paintings by Eva Svankmajerová caught my eye. It remind me to Botero but in a different way. She focuses in females emancipation and I picked this queer ‘Sleeping Venus: After Giorgione’. Note: Tate acquired this painting.
9 - 10. The way of displaying these works and how ironic are (finally some irony) was a definitely yes for me. By Barkley L. Hendricks.
We are saying bye to Frieze until next year! Thanks for the press pass.
